The effects of coating selection shouldn't be undersold. It's about more than just aesthetics. An appropriate coating can preserve and improve a product as well as extend a product's usable life. An inappropriate coating can lead to adhesion failure and premature wear as well as damage to the substrate. If the product may be subjected to heavy wear, high friction, high impact, or heavy manual handling, durability becomes a major concern. For these applications, powder coatings are very good products for automotive components, for machines, and for other industrial applications.

Aesthetic Appeal

In some cases, the appearance may need to be sacrificed to some extent for protection, but in many cases appearance may be just as important as protection.

Powder coatings and Cerakote® have a wide selection of finishes that make them useful for parts with aesthetics important to the overall product design.

Specialized Functions

Some parts require a coating that serves more than just protective functions.

Teflon® coatings can provide non-stick and low friction performance along with chemical resistance. These characteristics help overcome the limitations of some protective coatings.

Choose the Right Method of Application

The coating is just one part of the total equation. Consider the method of application as well.

The product's geometry, production volume, surface preparation, and desired finish all influence the application method.

Pad Printing

Pad printing is ideal for small and/or irregular shaped components and is a good choice for detailed artwork on either planar or irregular surfaces.

Screen Printing

Screens are limited to flat or slightly curved surfaces. Screen printing is an ideal decorating method when both visual quality and surface durability are important.

The application method must complement the coating material and the product geometry. A properly applied coating is greater performance than a poorly applied coating.

How to Choose the Best Specialty Coating for Your Product

There may be several good options, but the best specialty coating is the one that best fits your need.

Consider potential coating substrates. Environmental factors, performance requirements, appearance, application method, service life, maintenance requirements, and total cost also need to be taken into account. Initial total cost isn't always the best indicator of a good deal when looking at coatings.

Coating selection becomes greatly simplified when each of these factors are taken into consideration. A properly selected coating goes beyond surface protection and can contribute to the reliability and long-term value of a product.
